Privacy Policy — Under Budget

Effective date: 2026-06-27
App: Under Budget (Android package com.huntertran.underbudget)
Contact: hunter.tran.can@gmail.com

This Privacy Policy explains what data the Under Budget app (“the app”, “we”) collects, how it is used, and your choices. By using the app you agree to this policy.

Summary

  • We collect the data you create in the app (your transactions, categories, budget settings) and your Google account email used to sign in.
  • This data is stored in your private, per-user space in Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore) so it can sync across your devices.
  • Optional notification capture reads the content of notifications on your device to detect bank/payment messages. Notification text is parsed on your device; only the resulting transaction (amount, merchant, date) is saved to your budget.
  • We do not sell your data, do not use third-party advertising, and do not use third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.

Data we collect

Account information

  • Email address (and basic Google profile identifier) obtained when you sign in with Google. Used to authenticate you and scope your data to your account.

Financial information you enter or capture

  • Transactions you add or that are captured from notifications: amount, merchant/description, date, category, and tags. This is purchase/spending history.
  • Budget configuration: categories, tags, and your capture settings (enabled/disabled, mode, source-app whitelist, category mapping, parser rules).

Notification content (optional feature, Android only)

  • When you explicitly enable Auto-Capture Payments and grant Android notification access, the app reads the title and text of notifications to identify payment messages from your bank or wallet apps.
  • Notification text is processed on your device only. The full notification content is not transmitted to our servers or any third party. Only the derived transaction (amount, merchant, date) — the same data you could type yourself — is saved to your budget.
  • You control this with the in-app whitelist (“Source apps”), and you can revoke notification access at any time in Android system settings. The feature is off by default.

On-device storage

  • The app stores small local data on your device (e.g. your signed-in session, de-duplication keys, and recently-seen notification source-app names) to make the app work and avoid duplicate captures.

How we use data

  • To provide the core budgeting features: recording, categorizing, and displaying your transactions and budgets.
  • To sync your data across devices where you are signed in.
  • To detect and add payments from notifications only when you enable that feature.

We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or sale.

Where data is stored and who can access it

  • Your data is stored in Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore and Firebase Authentication), acting as our infrastructure/processor. Access is restricted to your authenticated account via server-side security rules.
  • Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and at rest by the Firebase platform.
  • We do not share your data with third parties for their own purposes.

Data retention and deletion

  • Your data persists in your account until deleted.
  • You can delete your data from the Settings page of the app.
  • You can also delete your account (with all data associate with it) from the Settings page too.
  • We don’t do “soft” delete. What is gone, is gone permanently. We cannot restore your data, even if we want to. That’s why you will need to confirm explicitly when deleting your data or your account in the Settings page.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy; the “Effective date” above reflects the latest version. Material changes will be reflected in the app and/or store listing.
