[UWP] Create image assets for your apps

Windows 10 apps (aka Universal Windows Apps) require a lot of different image sizes in their project (currently 39 different sizes). How do you produce these images? Open Photoshop or GIMP to crop, resize, save, and repeat 39 times? Today you can do it easily with 1 (a few) click. You can even create custom sizes.

1. The App

There is an app named “Universal Logo Maker for Windows” on the Windows Store. It can produce every image you need, especially for a Windows 10 package.

One look and you know how to use it, but let me walk you through it a bit anyway.

2. Using it

One look at the picture above and you know how to use it, right? You can also play with the sliders and the various buttons to understand the app better

3. Add custom size and scale

Click the small + button

On this page you can add your own new sizes

Platform name is the name of your custom collection. By this way, you can create many platforms that match your need, and choose to generate images for these custom platform or not.

Platform name is the name of your own list of different sizes. This way you can create as many platforms as you like. Give them different names so they’re easy to remember.

The big text box below is where you type the size settings.

The syntax:

Each setting is separated by “:”. First the name, then the width, then the height. Dead easy.

While you type, if it’s correct it previews the size that will be added to that platform

Once done, hit Add and that size lands in the platform, and the new platform is added to the platform list.

The nicest thing is that, over time, the list of platforms you created gets synced across every device you sign in to with the same Microsoft Account. Something like: create it and use it at the office, get home, open your machine and it’s already there to keep using.

4. Settings

There are quite a few options in settings. Where to save, about this app, feedback, blah blah blah. The best one is “Update Database”

Normally the app updates the database automatically. But for some reason (like being on 3g data, or your PC being on a flaky network), you can check for updates by hand. This only updates the default platform list, not the custom ones you made yourself, so it’s fine.
